3 Money Musts for Your Twenties

July 25th, 2019

We all like simple. And while there are a lot of things you CAN be doing with your finances, we’re going to focus on three of the most important. So without further ado, here we go!

# 1. Build your credit

Having good credit is key if you need to borrow money. It will ensure you get the lowest rate possible on your loans. (And bad credit might prevent you from getting a loan altogether). Your credit can even impact your ability to rent an apartment or sign up for certain utilities, like a phone plan.

There are a few factors that impact your credit, but the most important is paying your bills on time. And it can take some time to build your credit. So get started as soon as you can, and pay those bills.

# 2. Create an emergency fund

Being an adult means being ready for what life has to throw your way. And that means you need to be prepared for financial emergencies.

We typically recommend having an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months’ worth of living expenses. But if that seems like a lot of money, you can always start out with a smaller fund and build up over time.

You’d want to make sure this money can be accessed easily. So it’s generally a good idea to keep it in a savings account.

#3. Start investing

While retirement may seem like a long time off, it’s never too early to start investing. When you invest, your money is able to earn even more money for you, due to the power of compound interest. So this means time is your friend.

If your employer offers a 401(k) or 403(b), it can be a great way to get started. These offer tax advantages that help your money grow faster and some employers will even match a portion of your contributions. And who doesn’t like bonus money!?

Even if you don’t have access to one of these, you can still invest on your own in an tax-advantaged IRA or a taxable account.

We can help you get stared with any of these. Or if you want to learn about investing basics, we have you covered there too.

Summary

If you do these three things, you’ll be well on your way to a healthy financial life. And of course there’s a lot more you could be doing with your money.
